The Night Shift Is a Real Market

The Night Shift Is a Real Market

Lessons from the Darkside ยท Lesson 1

Globex session. The electronic overnight session of CME futures. For the equity index contracts it runs from 6:00 pm Eastern to 9:30 am Eastern, Sunday night through Friday morning, with a daily one-hour halt from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Everything that happens between the day session’s close and its next open happens here.

I did not choose the night session out of insight. I chose it because I hate mornings and because my employer had a firm opinion about where I should be at 9:30 am. The insight came later, around the time I noticed the night session was paying my bills and the day session was mostly collecting tuition.

Almost every course, room and influencer I have ever come across teaches the same thing without saying it out loud: the real market is the one that opens at 9:30 in the morning. Trade the open, trade the first hour, be flat by lunch. If you have a job, that advice quietly tells you that you are not a real trader.

I have built over 90% of my trading profits in the Globex session, after the workday was done. Not because I had a secret, but because I showed up to a market that was open when I was, over and over, until I knew it.

What kills traders who have jobs

It is almost never the strategy. It is reps. A trader who can only trade on days off might get thirty real sessions a year. Thirty sessions is not enough to learn anything about yourself, and every one of them carries the pressure of being your one chance this month. That pressure produces exactly the mistakes a full-time trader can afford to make a hundred times and learn from.

The night session gives you two hundred and fifty sessions a year without quitting your job. That is the whole argument.

Who is on the other side at night

  • Asia. Tokyo opens about two hours after the reopen, Hong Kong and Shanghai an hour and a half after that. Real institutions, real money, reacting to the US close and to their own news.
  • Europe. Frankfurt and London come in during the early morning hours Eastern and bring the biggest overnight volume of the night.
  • US desks and algorithms. Hedging, inventory adjustment and market-making never really stop. The book is thinner than at 10 am, but it is far from empty.
  • Traders like you. People in every time zone who cannot be at a screen at 9:30 Eastern. More of them than you think.

What thinner actually means

Volume in the Globex session is a fraction of the day session’s, and that is a real difference you have to plan for. It means three things in practice: a level can take longer to be tested, a move through a level on low volume means less than the same move at 10 am, and news out of Asia or Europe can move price fast against a thin book. None of that makes the session untradeable. It makes it a session with its own rules, which is what the rest of these lessons are about.

The honest trade-offs

  • Fewer A-grade trades per hour than the day session. The night rewards patience; it punishes activity.
  • You will trade tired sometimes. Sleep becomes part of risk management, and we will treat it that way in the schedule lesson.
  • Prop firms have rules about overnight trading, news, and the 5 pm halt that differ by firm. You read them before the first trade.
  • Nobody is watching. There is no crowd, no room, no hype. For most people that turns out to be an advantage.

Who these lessons are for

You have a career, you want to trade futures seriously, and you have been told you cannot. You can. These lessons teach the night session the way I trade it: the clock, the levels, the setups that survive after dark, the risk, and the schedule that fits around a job. Lesson 2 compares the two sessions side by side so you know exactly what you are choosing.

Key takeaways

  • The Globex session is a complete market with its own open, first hour, participants and setups.
  • Traders with jobs fail for lack of reps, not lack of strategy. The night session gives you the reps.
  • Thinner volume is a planning problem, not a reason to stay out.
  • Nothing on this site is a signal or a system. The point is to learn to read this session yourself.

Questions people ask

Can you really make money trading only the overnight session?

I have. Over 90% of my own trading profits came from the Globex session. That is one trader’s record, not a promise about yours, and most people who trade futures lose money. What I can say is that the session is complete enough to learn and trade well.

What time does the Globex session open?

For the CME equity index futures, 6:00 pm Eastern time, Sunday through Thursday nights, after a one-hour maintenance halt from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. It runs until the day session opens at 9:30 am Eastern.

Is the overnight session too thin to trade?

It is thinner than the day session, which means levels take longer to be tested, breaks mean less, and news moves price faster. Those are things you plan for, and the rest of these lessons show how.

Trade the session your life actually allows.

The night session is a complete market. Learn how it moves, watch me trade it live, read the write-up the next morning, and if you want people who trade the same hours, there is a room for that.
